Joanna of Castile (1479-1555) is a Spanish princess who became archduchess with her marriage to Philip the Handsome, sovereign of the Burgundian Low Countries. At the death of her mother, Isabella the Catholic, she became queen of Castile but she never ruled. Her tumultuous marriage, which took place on October 20, 1496, in Lierre, contributed to her black legend and her nickname: the Mad. Her marriage began with a shipwreck that caused her to lose a large part of belongings of her household that she was bringing with her. The chronicles described so well the misfortune of the Spanish princess, finding herself in a new territory with a reduced entourage, that historians have often described this first misfortune as a presage of the failure of her matrimonial alliance. However, rather than believing in bad omens, it is interesting to look at the real cost of this disaster. The economic sources could qualify or corroborate this dramatic vision of Joanna of Castile's first steps in the Low Countries. Understanding the economic impact for the territories that had to send or welcome a princess would allow us to grasp the emotion experienced during her integration into a new court and the experience of an alliance that was both dynastic and diplomatic. In the case of Joanna of Castile, observing these sources would make it possible to understand whether the costs of her shipwreck had an impact on the black legend that was built around her fate.

            <abstract xml:lang="fr">
