Information systems and ethical issues

Résumé

This chapter offers an overview of the ongoing discourse surrounding ethical concerns in information systems. It includes various examples from different applications and technologies, such as research information management systems, and places particular emphasis on the field of data ethics. It has three main sections: 1. Ethical aspects of information systems usage: This section delves into ethical considerations associated with the development, implementation, and management of information systems. It also focuses on ethical aspects of their use. 2. Ethical concerns regarding the systems themselves: Information systems possess their own ethical dimensions, including issues related to privacy, security, data, and metadata. This section explores the concept of "ethical infrastructures" (referred to as "infraethics") and examines the ethical inquiries raised by artificial intelligence. 3. People-centric ethical considerations: The final section places its primary focus on individuals, addressing topics such as data literacy, ethics education, and, most importantly, the ethical codes of conduct within the realm of information systems and computing. The chapter highlights increasing significance of ethics in the development and utilization of information systems, particularly in context of artificial intelligence. The aim of information systems is to benefit individuals, organizations, and society at large. Neglecting ethical concerns is not a tenable option, and proactive measures are essential in an era where addressing these ethical dimensions is just commencing.
